Dr. Binns specializes in vascular surgery.
Dr. Binns was born in Arlington, VA and attended Bridgewater College (summa cum laude) where he was inducted into Who's Who among Students in American Universities. At the University of Virginia School of Medicine, he was given the Lange Award for Academic Excellence and inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
As a resident in general surgery at UVA, Richard received the Warren Resident Teaching Award, and went on to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, where he completed a 2-year vascular surgery fellowship involving both basic vascular research and patient care of complex vascular disease. During the fellowship he was given the President's Award for his research topic from the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, and presented this work before a large audience of nationally known experts in the field.
Joining Surgical Associates of Richmond in 1989, Dr. Binns is now Chief of Surgery at Johnston-Willis Medical Center, and performs the full range of general and vascular surgery, including endocrine surgery, breast, laparoscopic, and major vascular.
Outside the hospital he and his wife Judy enjoy their son and daughter and their interests and activities. With one child in College and the other married, he still finds time for his passion: to be a master woodworker and furniture maker.
