Education

Dr. Peay's career began in healthcare as a pharmacist back in the early 1970's obtaining his B. S in Pharmacy at Howard University in 1972. He then attended medical school and received his degree in medicine in 1978 from the S. U. N. Y., at Buffalo. He completed his medical internship at S. U. N. Y., at Buffalo in 1979 and completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1982. While maintaining his private practice, Dr. Peay obtained his masters degree in Business Administration from Northwestern University at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management in 1995.

Experience

Dr. Peay has an academic appointment as Associate Clinical Professor at the Medical College of Virginia Department of Ophthalmology and the Vice Chair of the Virginia Health Information Board.  He received his board certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1983. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is licensed to practice medicine in Virginia. Dr. Peay has received several awards including the Service Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Excellence in Medicine Award from the National Medical Association. President Bill Clinton has also congratulated him for his work with the Health Policy Group on behalf of the NMA.

Practice

Dr. Peay is a Cataract and Refractive Surgical Specialist in the Richmond metropolitan area. He is currently in private practice as the Medical Director of the American Eye Center. He is currently serving on the Board of Trustees of the National Medical Association (NMA) and has previously served as Chairman and Interim Executive Vice President. Dr. Peay is active in the Medical Society of Virginia, as well as the Old Dominion Medical Society. Additionally, Dr. Peay was appointed to the Board of Visitors at Virginia Commonwealth University by Governor L. Douglas Wilder and served as Secretary of the Board. Dr. Peay is chairman of the Roman-Barnes Society of Ophthalmology, founded in 1963. Under his leadership the Roman-Barnes Society has sponsored numerous thought leaders at its annual meeting as well as scholarship awards for minority medical students selecting Ophthalmology as a specialty. Dr. Peay has mentored numerous medical students and worked with the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). He was chairman of the NMA committee on medical student recruitment and retention.

Personal Profile

Dr. Peay lectures to local area churches and civic groups on the subject of good eye health and works closely with the area Diabetes support groups (Diabetics in Motion). He has submitted guest editorials for the Review of Ophthalmology and the National Medical Association Journal and has appeared on numerous local television programs discussing various topics.  He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the National Association to Prevent.Blindness, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the Richmond First Club and the Richmond Chapter of the National MBA Association.

Dr. Peay is married to Cathie Elaine Turner and they have three children; Khendra Iman Peay, M.D., resident in Psychiatry at Indiana University, Clifton Peay, III, investment banking in Atlanta, Georgia, and Kandice Peay, fashion design student at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond, Virginia.
