Raymond G. Makhoul, M.D.
Education
Dr. Makhoul has had a distinguished career in surgery dating back to his medical school at the University of Chicago, a surgical residency at Duke University, and a fellowship in vascular surgery at the UCLA School of Medicine.
Experience
Dr. Ray Makhoul, a native of Michigan, joined SAR in the summer of 2000 after serving as Associate Professor and Chairman of the Division of Vascular Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia since 1996. During his academic tenure, Ray received 14 grants for his research efforts from national sponsors such as the National Institutes of Health and the US Public Health Service, totaling nearly 900,000 dollars for basic science and clinical investigation. He has presented at countless national meetings and as far away as Japan. He is also the author of over 60 peer-reviewed journal publications, 11 book chapters, an atlas of surgery, and 30 journal abstracts, and has even taken time to serve as a mentor to Virginia high school students at the Governor's School.
Practice
Ray is interested in the full spectrum of general and vascular surgery, in fact he was one of the founding members of the practice to develop VeinSolutions, a venous disorders clinic for SAR, which will provide testing and treatment for varicose veins and venous ulcers. Currently, Ray is serving as Trauma Director for CJW Medical Center, Chippenham Campus. Dr. Makhoul, in addition with Dr. Evans, recently took part in a comparative trial sponsored by VNUS medical studying both endovenous laser and radiofrequency ablation of varicose veins.
Personal Profile
Ray and his wife Kelli have two sons and a daughter and live in Short Pump, VA. When the occasion presents itself, Ray enjoys hiking with his daughter and spending time watching his sons play hockey and other sports.
