Specialty - Shoulder

Your shoulder is the large, strong joint where your upper arm attaches to your body. The humerus, the large bone in your upper arm, has a ball-shaped head at the top which allows it to move in a large range of motion, allowing you to move your arm from front to back, up and down and side to side with ease. The joint is held together by the “rotator cuff”, a strong group of muscles, ligaments and tendons connecting the humerus to the shoulder blade (scapula) and collarbone (clavicle).

Shoulders can be injured in accidents, or affected by conditions such as arthritis, but one of the more common problems is a rotator cuff injury, sometimes requiring surgical repair. Physical therapy and medications are important parts of the treatment of any shoulder injury, along with behavior modification to re-learn how to safely use the shoulder.

Bicep surgery is performed as the result of an injury to the bicep or the bicep tendons. This can include, but is not limited to bicep tendonitis and bicep tendon tears.

Clavicle surgery is performed when the clavicle, or collarbone, is fractured and bones are out of place. These fractures are typically caused by a direct blow to the shoulder, for example, when a person falls on their shoulder.

When a frozen shoulder occurs, the shoulder capsule, or the strong tissue of the shoulder, becomes tight and thickens. Surgery is done when minor treatments are not successful. The surgery aims to stretch and release the stiffened joint capsule.

Tendons are what attach muscles to bones. Therefore, the biceps tendons attach the bicep muscle to the bones in your shoulder & elbow. Torn tendons can be caused by a variety of factors, including injury and overuse. Typically, minor treatments are done to relieve symptoms. However, if needed, surgery is required to repair the torn tendon. Tendons are typically repaired with minimal incisions.

Rotator Cuff surgery is performed to improve shoulder strength and movement. The rotator cuff is what works with the joint of your shoulder to allow you to raise and rotate your arm. During surgery, space is cleaned of loose fragments of tendon and other debris, and more room is made for rotator cuff tendon. Torn edges of the supraspinatus tendon are sewn together and to the top of the humerus.

Tennis elbow occurs when the tendons in your elbow are overworked. Your muscles have been overused and strained. It is usually caused by repetitive motions of the wrist and arm. Surgery is done when other treatments, such as therapy, have not improved your condition. During the surgery, any tissue that has been damaged is removed.
